JakeLinn hissed, mightily baring his great white teeth. He hunched his back, nostrils flaring, and lunged. From his jaws, a tiny, newborn lynx dangled helplessly, limp now.
KiraLinn dipped her head low, sobbing, as JakeLinn attacked another of her young ones. He had taken two of their lives, but she would not let him take the third. As he rapidly shook the newborn lynx, KiraLinn steathily tucked the third into her thick fur. The little one whined as she hushed him, still sobbing, and she looked up innocently into JakeLinn's furious eyes.
"I cannot believe you would do that to me, Kira," He said, "Mating with BetaOnix was the worst thing you could possibly do- you're my mate, Kira, not his... I'm appalled that you would do that to me- put me through the misery as you carried the children, what did you expect?"
"I expected my husband not to be so cruel. You killed the children, which I worked so hard to carry for al those months... Jake, just because our parents set us up, forces us to become mates, do we have to? I could leave, and have nothing to do with you, now. You know that I love Beta, I couldn't resist... He's a handsome lynx, Jake, and I've always loved him. But I will never love you- especially not now." KiraLinn sighed, "Now I'll be off, and you'll be off. Find someone who will love you. It won't be me."
"KiraLinn! You will not leave- not yet, at least. I know that lynx cub is under your fur, you give it to me, and I will let you be, go live with your Beta, but give me the cub."
"Never will I allow you my last cub. It is the runt- It won't have a fighting chance to survive, even with the love of I, it's mother... Leave it be, leave me be, and I will leave you be." She ran off, as swiftly as she could, without dropping the newborn. JakeLinn growled after her, but let her leave. The killing of the cubs caused him a serious anguish- so large, that he never, ever loved like a mate again. But this story isn't JakeLinn's, or KiraLinn's... It isn't BetaOnix's either- far from it, this story... Is about
Mayella of Lynx
"Kira! You look... thin? Are you alright, honey?" BetaOnix caressed KiraLinn's silky ears with his giant paws. "Oh, Kira! You're sick, lay here, and I will help you... Wait, you're... you're... The cubs were born!? I'm so excited!" KiraLinn nodded at her real mate, the father of her cubs, a quiver sent through her body, and she burst out, weeping bitterly.
"Oh Beta, Oh Beta, why have I injured you so? I didn't mean it, I swear, the cubs, the cubs... are dead, all but one, the runt. The others were killed... by JakeLinn. The one left... here." She nuzzled the little creature away from her side, where it was nursing, to BetaOnix's side. He looked upon the creature with awe, a look of love, mixed with shock, and anger crossed his face. He curled himself around the little body, and pulled KiraLinn closer. She didn't resist, instead she succumbed to his strong grip, and nestled in closer to her cub, as they fell fast asleep.
Awakened by her new mate, KiraLinn stood up, stretching every inch of her being until she was wide awake. The cub, a little girl, as they now knew, whimpered beside her, as if saying, "Mum, that wind is cold, hold me please?" BetaOnix lumbered off through the trees and KiraLinn carried her baby to a place with thicker brush, where the wind wasn't as strong.
Not a word was spoken when BetaOnix came back with a large hare. KiraLinn simply nodded her head his way as she began eating, she swallowed it all- hair, bones, ears- all of it.
Oh, and the cub... The cub's name was...
Mayella

Lynx

"Will you change your two-half, Kira?" BetaOnix asked.
KiraLinn thought for a while, then shook her head, no, "No, Beta, I really couldn't I want something to remind me of the past life... which I have left behind, with all sincerity, to join you."
"What of Mayella? She be an Onix or Linn?"
"Neither, Beta. Mayella will just be Mayella... She will just be... My little Mayella, my Lynx... She will just be Mayella of Lynx, is it fine?"
BetaOnix growled quizzically, "I don't understand, Kira. You wish to be a Linn, and now you wish for our Mayella to be a... a no-half lynx? Kira, we can't let our girl live like that. She will be punished for it in the end, you know this as well as I. But if you wish, it is fine."
KiraLinn smiled thankfully to her mate, he was so understanding... and strong, what a perfect lynx, why she fell for him in the first place.
The large, very dark, gray lynx, with deep black spots, and extremely long ear tufts was a beaut. His paws were giant, the perfect snowshoe for the tough Canadian Rockies' weather, and his fur was soft like fleece- his cheek fluff was thick and long, falling below his shoulders in crisp fingers of fur, completely hiding his white whiskers. His personality was that of a star- tough, yet cuddly, sweet, yet aggressive.
Now, the she, KiraLinn, was quite different. Her fur was pale yellow, darkening slightly in winter, when there was less sunlight, and the spots were jet black, standing out stunningly. Her ear tufts were average length, but instead of the usual black, they were completely white. Her cheek fluff was short, making her face look round instead of triangular, but she was still a beautiful sort, with light brown eyes, and small paws, making her fleet-footed, but not great when the snow came in.
"Now we must be off, Kira," Beta said, trotting away, then trotting back. "You know, the snow will come within minutes, we should get to the deeper forests before it comes. Kira?"
Kira was staring at her cub, amazed at the strange little being's odd doings. The almost-naked lynx cub, no older than three days, was sitting, eyes still closed, head in the air. Her lips were pursed, and a hum rumbled through her body. "Hmmm, hm... Hmmmmm, mmmm. Mmmmmmmmm...."
"Mayella... What is happening?"

Mayella's eyes flickered under her eyelids. Her tail flapped on her haunches, and her paws padded the ground, "Mmmm, mmm, hmmmm... hm, hmm, hm, hmmm." She shook her little head from side to side, and started again, this time with a different, more high- toned hum, "Huvvvv... huvvvv... Hoov- huv- hoov... Hmmm." She ended and lay her head down, tiredly.
Imagine how hard it would be, a lynx mother, helplessly watching her cub hum herself to a haunted sleep, for, after this strange doing, Mayella fell into a restless dream.
"Mayella, wake up, love!" The terrified mother cried, as she grabbed the child in firm, gentle jaws. She galloped after her mate, full speed, into the darkness of the trees.
"Mum, Mum, I can talk, if you would only listen." A shadow deepened the dream into a clear, white darkness. "Mum, Mum, listen, Mum, hear me out," The eyes of the lynx opened, "Mum, Mum, I can see, look my way, see what I see." A sound vibrated through the woods, "Mum, I can hear, talk to me, but listen close, something is coming."Feet tromped along the ground, "Mum, Mum, feel it! Feel it now! Listen, Mum, See, Mum, Feel, Mum, Run, Mum!"
The lynx awoke to her mother and father huddling about her. They were under a little bush- or at least KiraLinn and Mayella were- BetaOnix had his head under the bush, as he couldn't fit his whole physique under there.
For the first time in her life, Mayella could see. She could hear better than ever. She could mew and speak slightly, she could feel vibrations- she could move, walk, (though she was still small and fragile). The lynx had also grown fur. White fur, and light yellow spots, with black tipped ears. She had her father's face, and her mother's paws. She was pretty, but her light coat, and no-half name, would be a doom to her in latter years.

KiraLinn and BetaOnix were amazed when Mayella's eyes fluttered. She look into their eyes with her deep grey ones, and a sprinkle of tears stopped on the tip of Mayella's whiskers. She cried to her mum, pondering why they were staring at her so.
Of course, there was a perfect explanation for their glances at Mayella. For one, her eyes were quite a sight. Never was a grey- eyed lynx ever born who lived, yet Mayella had lived in a sleep for one month, and she was healthy, all the same as other lynxes. Secondly, her pale fur shouldn't have become. The dark fur of her father was much more likely to be passed down than the lighter-than-her-mother fur, (genetics are confusing!). Third, her tail. Her tail was short, like your average lynx, but it had a blue dot on it. Completely blue, navy blue, as if a bruise had sprouted hair the same color as itself.
Her strangeness never once made her mother's love any less intense. KiraLinn seemed to smother her child all the more for her differences, ever-worrying about her, never sleeping a wink if she wasn't home...
And BetaOnix had an unconditional love for his daughter too. He taught her to hunt, and though lynx are normally solitary creatures after mating, he felt the need to never stray from his little Mayella's side.
Then the impossible happened.
KiraLinn pushed her child away.
A year and a half had passed, and it was early February. BetaOnix and KiraLinn had started becoming more disagreeable with eachother. Finally, BetaONix had left, and KiraLinn became angry at Mayella for staying.
"Mayella! You bad lynx, leave, you should have been gone long ago! You, you are able enough now! Leave, my daughter, leave, now!" She crowed time and time again. Mayella took this blow to heart, and left a few days later. She had no connections with her mother, for years upon years. But her mother felt horrible later, for she new that being so high-strung was just a normal part of mating season.
In late April, KiraLinn birthed three cubs- AprilOnix, KiraOnix, and BetaOnix Junior.
Now, the story begins.

The first year without her mother went quickly, not much exciting happened... Though one incident stuck in her mind forever, this incident, happening in early March of that first year of many:
Mayella felt something watching her. She turned, baring her teeth agressively. Nothing was there. She stalked on through the night, head hung low, ears flat on her broad head. Her tail flapped about, acting as a "Beware!" flag to all the animals hiding in the brush.
Some tracks were in the snow ahead.
Some young lynx tracks.
The lynx which they belonged to jogged over, "Hello, girl." He said, not bothering with introductions, "How you doing, this evening, girl?"
"I'm fine," Mayella said, nervously looking at her paws. She sat down, eyes flickering over the beautiful lynx. "I'm... May... ella," She quickly whispered, embarassed at her stuttering.
"And I'm Jax, Mayella, but what is your two-half, sweet girl?"
"Ummm..." Mayella thought about what her two-half could be. A lynx without a two-half is nothing, normally, so, improving a name, she sighed, "Uh, Ella. I'm May- two-half is Ella."
"Ah, and I'm JaxClaw. You're a beaut, ain't you?" He smoothly glided towards her, while she jumped up and back a step. He looked up her white figure, and examined her blue tail momentarily. "You know, beauty comes in all colors, and all... eyes," His furrowed forehead showed deep thought and concentration as he sought out all of her differences.
"MayElla, girl, do you want to be my... mate?" He shook his broad shoulders, and his great gray fur rolled like a sea of waves over his back, as he laughed heartily at Mayella's look of horror. He stepped forward, closer to Mayella, as she stepped back but was stopped by a tree.
He raised his paw to her chin, lifted it, and stared in her eyes, "Sweet girl, I'll find you... Next year, girl, then our love can be." He swatted a snowflake off of Mayella's nose, then leaned forward, licking her cheeks in a passionate way. He then roamed far away, and until next year, that is the last she ever saw of JaxClaw.
