Games install fine but when I try to play I get error message 0MB detected

I have installed all games up to MM2,  After I install and try to play I get this error message: You need at least 256MB Of System Memory to run Zoo Tycoon 2 (0MB detected).  I'm running Window's Vista Ultimate, on MSI motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 X dual core processor 5200+ 4095MB memory(ram) and a Radeon X1650 (512MB) video card.  System specs are not the problem.  Does anyone have an answer to this?  Microsoft knowledge base only tells me about the problem no answers.  All drivers are up to date.  Quake 4 runs fine, Dungeon Seige runs great, Melbourne Cup Challenge runs great, Age of Pirates runs great.  Even set my virutal memory up real high.

It's just vista. Many people are having the same problem as you, vista still has a ton of bugs. Hence why I havn't upgraded my laptop well anyway try uninstalling and re-installing. I'm not that familiar with vista so thats all I can say about it.

I am having the same exact problem. Vista Home Premium 64bit Edition. I also have 4GB of RAM, so I think it may have something to do with that, since that is really the only thing we have in common...

Does anyone know of a solution to the Error Message both myself and the OP are experiencing?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't know the answer, but exactly the same problem, saying I haven't got enough memory when I have 4GB.

Do we know if running in XP mode resolves?

The game doesn’t seem to recognize RAM when it’s at 4GB, at least on Vista. I don’t know if the problem exists on XP.

Re: Games install fine but when I try to play I get error message 0MB detected

    Cricket,

I have the same problem with ZT2 in XP Pro x64 on 64-bit hardware.  After some internet research, I found that many others are having the same problem: ZT2 claims that 0MB RAM is available (quite the quandry, no?).  The one common link I was able to see was that all systems were reported as having exactly 4GB RAM installed.

Armed with this info, I popped out two DIMMS reducing my RAM from 4GB to 2GB.  When I started up the PC, ZT2 launched and ran perfectly.  Although that makes my daughter happy, it doesn't do the same for me.  I don't really like the idea of ZT2 not playing well with others, so I am working on a better solution than cutting down my system's memory.

    Good luck.

There is another thread on this with another solution in addition to the one I'm posting below, but it may apply to Vista Only.  This is a software solution involving 'msconfig.'

    Click on Start

Type msconfig in search box and press Enter

If system prompts you to Continue or Cancel, click on Continue

In system Configuration Window, select Boot Tab

    Click on Advanced Option Window.

Click check mark on Maximum Memory

Under Maximum memory Type memory to 2000

Click on OK, again click OK to close the window.

click on Restart to restart the system and test the game

Re: Games install fine but when I try to play I get error message 0MB detected

    Hey folks,

I realize that this thread is a bit old, and I don't mean to bump it unintentionally, but I have a solution to this problem. There are so few results in Google for "zoo tycoon 2 you need at least 256MB" that I thought it worthwhile for anyone else running into this problem.

It does indeed seem to be related to 4GB of RAM on Vista. I recently upgraded from 2GB to 4GB, and that's when this problem started.

Anyway, find the zt.exe file in your Zoo Tycoon directory, and right click it. On the Compatibility tab, check the "Run this program in compatibility mode" box, and choose "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" from the list. Click Ok.

Now, right click the zt.exe file again, and choose "Run as administrator" to start the program. Worked like a charm for me, and I hope it sorts the problem out for anyone else, also.
